From Sarah Ivory: Reflections that you may find useful

Hi All,

Hope your first week of sessions went well last week.  Please be in touch with any issues or questions.

A few reflections on this week:

Thanks to Marta, I've added some additional slides to the Team Working lecture, focused more on MBTI - I'm only going through these quickly in the lecture, but it may mean that you want to spend a little more time discussing MBTI and different personalities in the Workshops.  It's up to you.  I will upload the slides immediately after the session.

There is some confusion about Topic Seminar reflections.  I'm going to go through that in tomorrow's lecture with DETAILED instructions on where to find the information etc.

Please be careful this week in Topic Seminars as regards students 'fishing' for the 'answer' to the Analytical Essay 1.  I've had a few emails with students saying things like 'I can't find a definition of Shareholder Captialism - can you tell me what it is?'.  Quite apart from the fact that there is no definitive definition, and that  we have explored it in lectures, it is also important that they learn to think for themselves.  This can be very hard for them to understand and appreciate, but I know we are all on the same page about wanting them to become more independent thinkers.

Finally, I hope you are enjoying watching the lectures, for those who are.  I always welcome feedback and suggestions :-)

I'll keep posting here as ideas come to me, and I'd love it if everyone else did too!

Sarah

  1. Thanks for the tip Sarah. Just want to say Hi to everyone - very late to the party so bringing up the rear as usual! I have a wonderful little book which I used to carry around in my bag and used to find it useful for my mentees in my previous life. Anyway, it's made a reappearance and its by A Bonnett (2001) "How to Argue" Pearson. There is an update on the market from 2011. He is a social humanities prof from Newcastle but its value is it's short and sweet and to the point and an OK buy for those students with limited funds. It's also really useful for those whose first language is not English.

Can I ask a question please? does the library have academic counsellors where a student may take a draft paragraph from an essay ad receive essay skills feedback? is there such a service at UofE?
